Actually, according to the Twitter, it was a miss wording about increased crew sizes. I believe you still need to beat the game once before you can use the medium ships. Larger ones are coming--also discussed on the twitter.

I wouldn't want a captain's log, extended or otherwise, to replace the crew commenting on the situation, but having it pop up as a kind of unfolding journal in the pause menu would be cool for sure. I think that could be cool for non-essential gameplay, but i would want it locked off during combat. Trying to flip between combat decks and supercilious decks would be a bit complex.
